Periodontics (Gum Treatment)

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and the supporting tissues surrounding the teeth (gums, bones, connective tissue). Gum diseases begin with the accumulation of plaque and tartar; If left untreated, it can progress to gum recession, bone loss and loss of teeth. The earliest symptoms are gum redness, swelling and bleeding when brushing (gingivitis). At this stage, treatment is easy and full recovery is achieved. As the disease progresses (periodontitis), a pocket forms between the gum and the tooth and the supporting bone begins to melt. In our clinic, periodontal treatment is planned according to the degree of the disease: scaling, tooth root surface smoothing (root surface curettage), and in advanced cases, surgical procedures are performed. Additionally, gum aesthetics (pink aesthetics) and correction of excess gums that appear when smiling are also included in this field. Gum health is the basis of all dental treatments and aesthetic applications; Without healthy gums, permanent aesthetic or prosthetic results cannot be achieved. Regular tartar cleaning and correct brushing are the most effective ways to prevent gum diseases.

01 My gums bleed while brushing, is it normal?

No, this is the earliest sign of gum disease. Healthy gums do not bleed. In the early period (gingivitis), complete recovery is achieved with dental scaling; If neglected, it may progress to bone loss.

02 Does dental scaling damage teeth?

No. Scaling (decalcification) does not harm the teeth; On the contrary, it protects gum health. There may be short-term sensitivity after the procedure, this is temporary. It is recommended to do it 1-2 times a year.

03 Can receding gums be treated?

Its progression can be stopped with dental scaling and proper care at an early stage. In advanced cases, the extracted area can be treated with surgical methods such as gum grafting. Early diagnosis is very important.

04 Can a loose tooth be saved?

Loose teeth due to gum disease can be saved with periodontal treatment and splinting (tying the teeth together) if bone loss is not too advanced. Evaluation is made after digital x-ray.

05 My gums show a lot when I smile, is there a solution?

Yes. This situation, known as "gum smile", is corrected with gum aesthetics (pink aesthetics). A more balanced and aesthetic smile is achieved by shaping the excess gum tissue.
