Pedodontics is the branch of dentistry concerned with children from birth to around thirteen, covering both milk teeth and the permanent teeth that follow. Fissure sealant is worth understanding, since parents often meet the term for the first time at a check-up. It covers the deep grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth before decay can start there, and it is generally well tolerated by children. Fluoride application strengthens the enamel against decay. Both are quick, and both are done under a dentist's supervision.

The first check-up is recommended once the first milk tooth appears, and by around the child's first birthday at the latest. That is earlier than many parents expect. The point is less about finding problems in a one-year-old and more about starting early, so the dentist becomes familiar rather than alarming, and so anything developing is noticed while it is still small.

After that, regular check-ups do two jobs. They keep decay in view before it becomes a filling, and they let the dentist follow how the jaw and the permanent teeth are developing.
