A zirconia crown covers the whole tooth, not only the face of it. Almost everything else follows from that one fact. A laminate veneer is bonded to the visible front surface of a structurally sound tooth; a crown is chosen when the tooth itself has lost strength — root-treated teeth, large old fillings, cracks and fractures, or deep discolouration that sits inside the tooth rather than on it. Zirconium oxide handles chewing load well, which is why it is usually the material discussed for molars and premolars, for bridges, and for restorations placed on implants.

The trade-off deserves to be said plainly. To seat a crown, the dentist reshapes the tooth on every side, and that reduction cannot be reversed. If your teeth are healthy and your concern is purely how your front teeth look, a crown is generally the wrong instrument, and our dentists will tell you so rather than sell you eight of them. Because zirconia carries no metal substructure, it leaves no grey line along the gum, and allergic reactions are very rare.

The calendar is usually the first question. An uncomplicated zirconia case is built around two to three sessions spread over roughly four to seven working days, which is why many patients travelling from abroad plan one trip instead of two. It begins with an examination and a digital panoramic X-ray — free of charge here — because only after that can a dentist tell you how many teeth are genuinely involved and how long your case needs.

The sequence itself is unhurried. The tooth is prepared under local anaesthetic, a digital impression is taken, and the shade is matched against your neighbouring teeth in daylight instead of being picked off a chart. The laboratory then produces each crown individually, you return for a try-in, and the fit is adjusted before anything is cemented for good. If a root canal, an extraction or gum treatment has to come first, the schedule grows. We would rather say that while you are still planning than after you have booked a return flight.
